  • ANNAPURNA REGION

Most trekkers heading to the Annapurna region follow the same well-worn paths to Base Camp or Poon Hill, walking single file past dozens of other groups each day. Khopra Danda offers something different: a 6-day route to a high ridge viewpoint where you might see more yaks than fellow trekkers.

The trail climbs through rhododendron forests to Khopra Ridge at 3,660 meters, with an optional day hike to sacred Khayer Lake at 4,660 meters. This guide covers the complete itinerary, difficulty level, permits, packing list, and how Khopra Danda compares to other short treks in the region.

What Is the Khopra Danda Trek

The Khopra Danda Trek is a 6-day route in Nepal’s Annapurna Conservation Area that climbs to Khopra Ridge at 3,660 meters, with an optional day hike to sacred Khayer Lake at 4,660 meters. “Danda” translates to ridge in Nepali, and this particular ridge delivers panoramic views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchhre. The route connects Ghandruk, Tadapani, and Ghorepani through quiet forests and traditional villages, making it an alternative for trekkers who want solitude alongside Himalayan scenery.

Unlike the well-trodden Annapurna Base Camp or Poon Hill circuits, Khopra Danda sees only a fraction of the foot traffic. The trail passes through community-managed lodges rather than commercial teahouses, meaning your stay directly supports local families. You walk through rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and past seasonal herder settlements where the pace of life has remained unchanged for generations.

What Permits Are Required for the Khopra Danda Trek?

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit

The ACAP permit grants entry to the Annapurna Conservation Area and costs approximately USD 30 for foreign nationals. All trekkers on this route require one, as the entire trail falls within the protected conservation zone. The permit helps fund environmental protection and community development projects in the region, and you must carry it throughout the trek as checkpoints verify permits at multiple locations along the route.

TIMS Card

The Trekkers’ Information Management System card serves as a registration document that helps authorities track trekker safety and location. Organized treks through registered agencies require TIMS, which can be arranged in Kathmandu or Pokhara before starting the trek. Your trekking company typically handles permit arrangements as part of the package, though independent trekkers need to obtain both ACAP and TIMS on their own before reaching the trailhead.

Accommodation and Food on the Khopra Ridge Trail

Teahouses and Community Lodges

Teahouse trekking means staying in simple lodges along the trail rather than camping. On the Khopra route, most lodges are community-run, with basic but comfortable rooms featuring twin beds and shared bathrooms. The community lodge system operates differently from commercial teahouses, with local families rotating hosting duties and profits staying within the village rather than going to outside operators.

Typical Meals on the Trail

Dal bhat, the traditional Nepali meal of rice, lentils, and vegetables, appears on every menu and provides the calories needed for long trekking days. Other common options include noodle soups, fried rice, momos, and pancakes for breakfast. Vegetarian food is widely available, and most lodges can accommodate dietary restrictions with advance notice. Meals are freshly prepared, though menu variety decreases at higher elevations where supplies are more limited.

Drinking Water and Charging

Bringing a reusable water bottle and purification method reduces plastic waste and saves money compared to buying bottled water at each stop. Most lodges offer boiled water for a small fee, or you can treat stream water with purification tablets or a filter. Charging phones and cameras is possible at most lodges for a small fee, though electricity becomes less reliable at higher elevations and charging times may be limited to certain hours.

How Do I Get to the Khopra Danda Trailhead?

Getting to the trailhead involves traveling from Kathmandu to Pokhara, then continuing by road to Ghandruk or Nayapul. The Kathmandu to Pokhara journey takes approximately 6 to 8 hours by scenic highway or 25 minutes by domestic flight, depending on your budget and time constraints. Most trekkers choose the tourist bus for a more affordable option, while those with limited time opt for the quick flight that offers mountain views on clear days.

From Pokhara, a private vehicle or local bus reaches Ghandruk in about 2 hours along a winding mountain road. The drive passes through terraced farmland and small villages before arriving at the trailhead. Some itineraries start from Nayapul instead, which is closer to Pokhara and serves as the main entry point for several Annapurna treks. Your trekking company typically arranges all transportation as part of the package, making the logistics straightforward even for first-time visitors to Nepal.

Itinerary

This trek mostly starts from Pokhara. However, Wilder Way Trekking provides a complimentary bus ride from Kathmandu to Pokhara, where you will spend the night. The following morning, after breakfast in Pokhara, we drive to Nayapul, then off-road to Ghandruk via Kimche. Ghandruk is renowned for Buddhist monasteries and houses made of slate and stone. From Ghandruk, you will hike through rhododendron woods, hearing the sounds of waterfalls and bird chirpings and enjoying the views of Annapurna II (7,937 meters), Annapurna III (7,555 meters), Annapurna IV (7,525 meters), and Lamjung Himal (6,931 meters) before arriving at Tadapani. You will not find many settlements on the way, but there are some teahouses at Bhainsi Kharka.

We will continue trekking through the open countryside via the local water buffalo pastures. You will gradually ascend, enjoying the views of the Annapurna range to reach a small pass. From this pass, the trail descends through rhododendron trees to a clearing known as Bayli Kharka- where we will spend the night. From Bayli Kharka village, you can enjoy superb views of Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167m), the seventh-highest mountain in the world.

From Bayli Kharka, we descend through forests to reach Chistibang pastures and trek for around 2 hours- ascending above the timberlines to reach Khopra Danda. On the way, you might be able to get glimpses of Himalayan Tahr (goat) and Danfe (pheasant). If you look above the horizon, you will see amazing views of Dhaulagiri, Damphus Peak, Tukuche Peak, Nilgiri, Annapurna 1, Annapurna South, and deep down Sikha. The Khopra ridge also provides views of Kaligandaki Gorge - the deepest gorge in the world.

From Khopra Ridge, we have the option to walk to Khayar Lake (4665m), which will take around 5 hours. Hindus consider this lake holy and believe that you can attain Nirvana by taking a dip into it. After visiting the lake we will return to Khopra and trek down to reach Swanta village. Swanta village is known for its community cheese factory. You can explore Swanta village and taste their cheese.

This day we will leave the beautiful village of Swanta and head to Ghorepani - our destination for the day. At first, we will descend through the village fields and reach a small river that we will cross on a suspension bridge and head upwards to Chittre village, from where we will join the classic Annapurna Circuit trekking trail. We will be ascending for a while to reach the Ghorepani.

We ascend to Poon Hill (3,210m) early morning to view sunrise over the  Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs - including Mt Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). Poon Hill is also a favorite spot for photographers looking to capture the best views of the Himalayas. We will not leave Poon Hill without clicking pictures to our heart's content.  After catching sight of heavenly sunrise views on humongous mountains, and rice terraces, we will return to Ghorepani and trek to Birethanti. From Birethanti, we will catch a bus to return to Pokhara via Nayapul. Your trek ends in Pokhara.
